“I went on a five day hiking trip through the wilderness in Ethiopia, to the Omo River. Not alone, it was with a small group. A donkey carried our luggage, some food and some water. I rarely saw any villages or people for an entire period. At one moment I sat up in my tent and I saw about nineteen Surma warriors coming closer: armed with Kalashnikovs and totally nude. One of the guides started to call “no problem, no problem!”. I felt quite foreign and alienated for a while. As a group we decided to walk towards them. We started to greet one another amiably in English, Dutch and in their local language. A little uncomfortable, but luckily it was fraternal. In the end I found out that they were solely collecting honey, so being anxious during travels is not always necessary.”
